Lactic Acid & Excercise
Lactic acid is produced naturally in humans and animals. It is formed from glycogen by muscle cells when they are not getting enough oxygen to support the enegy production.
People have many misconseptions when it comes to Lactate, and the effect it has on you after you excercise. Many people associate lactate as the cause of fatigue during a workout and muscle soreness after a workout, however this is not correct. It has been discovered that lactate actually improves your performance. Lactic acid accumulates in our muscles during short strenuous workouts such as sprinting due to the need for energy. However our bodies create lactate at a much faster rate then our tissues are able to remove it, therefore giving our muscles a source of energy so that way we can continue with our excercise. Then lactic acid is removed from our muscles and blood through oxidation, and therefore it cannot be responsible for muscle soreness. Lactate is very important for our bodies because in very long excercises the lactate can be oxidized by another muscle, and this results in delaying our fatigue and improving our sport performance. Also during high endurance type of workouts lactate is used as an energy source for our muscles.
